The members of IMS Toastmasters Genesis Club at The IMS Ghaziabad, University Courses Campus, participated in session on Platform Skills by the World Champion of Public Speaking, 1995, Mark L. Brown. In 1995, Mark defeated more than 20,000 contestants from 14 countries to win the illustrious Toastmasters World Championship of Public Speaking. Being the recipient of the coveted designation of Certified Speaking Professional from the National Speakers Association, and one of the most popular inspirational speakers in the world, Mark had many tips and techniques to share with the audience. The entire session was power packed with many valuable takeaways for the audience. Mark gave insights into how grabbing the attention and connecting with the audience important to deliver a successful speech. He suggested everyone to deliver the presentation as ?you? and not as a speaker because when a personal touch is added to the speech, the audience relates better with you. When you are on stage, spatial knowledge can be used as a tool, besides using left and right spaces use the front and back spaces also, but move for a purpose. Further he suggested that choosing a topic which interests the audience will help to establish a relationship with them. Any life incident, experience would give an emotional connect. There has to be true emotions in the speech and try to relive those moments on the stage rather than putting drama into it. Give natural pauses in between to give your audience time to process what you delivered. Furthermore, there should be a takeaway for the audience to leave a lasting impact on them. For preparation, he suggested practicing and practicing, observing people around, taking more opportunities to use the stage, striking conversations with random people, recording your own speech and improvising is a good way of beating yourself each time. After the session the platform was opened for questions which were answered beautifully by Mark. As an expert in helping people overcome their fears to reach their maximum potential, he used a unique combination of humor and poignancy to reach the most diverse audiences, and he continually inspired people from all walks of life to achieve ever-increasing levels of excellence. The idea of such sessions is to provide an opportunity to the budding speakers to improve their speaking abilities by taking guidance from the renowned and established public speakers. The efforts of the toastmasters fraternity in bringing such experienced speakers to an approachable platform is worth appreciation.
