Workshop on Data Visualization

The workshop was conducted on 3rd November 2018 at IMS UC Campus. Prof. Kapil Mohan Garg and Prof. Abhinav Kataria organized the workshop and encouraged the student to attend. The workshop included the creation and study of the visual representation of data so that the information could be conveyed clearly and efficiently, data visualization uses statistical graphics, plots, information graphics and other tools.

INTRODUCTION TO DATA VISUALIZATION
Data visualization is viewed by many disciplines as a modern equivalent of visual communication. It involves the creation and study of the visual representation of data. To communicate information clearly and efficiently, data visualization uses statistical graphics, plots, information graphics and other tools. Numerical data may be encoded using dots, lines, or bars, to visually communicate a quantitative message. Effective visualization helps users analyze and reason about data and evidence. It makes complex data more accessible, understandable and usable. Users may have particular analytical tasks, such as making comparisons or understanding causality, and the design principle of the graphic (i.e., showing comparisons or showing causality) follows the task.

WELCOMING THE PROFESSOR
The workshop started with the introduction of prof. Aniruddha ghosh. The short introduction speech was given by Mr. Ujjwal kumar. He introduced the class to Professor Ghosh. The students got to know about such talented faculty of IMS Ghaziabad with such a diverse experience of both industry and academics would bestow them with knowledge

OVERVIEW OF THE WORKSHOP
The workshop was started with introduction of MS-Excel, the importance of data visualization and how it can be used beneficially at different level of jobs to make a job easier. He asked some question regarding different types of graphs and their purposes so that he can have an insight about what the students already know so that he can set a path accordingly for better understanding of the students. There were mainly eight topics of discussion, that are as follow

There were mainly eight topics of discussion, that are as follows:
1.Integrating a bar and line chart, using the primary and secondary axis effectively.
2. Pie of Pie; Bar of Pie - Customizing the Pie of Pie and Bar of Pie
3. Inserting icons and creating infographics in graphs
4. Tree map Charts and Applications
5. Sunburst Charts and Applications
6. Introduction to Gantt chart - data preparation for Gantt chart
7. Introduction to Waterfall chart - data preparation for Waterfall chart
8. Creating break in column charts for better data visualization

The students learn about all these topics in detail while performing the task simultaneously for better understanding and learning. There was discussion about how different graphs can be used to visualize different situations for clear understanding of the data. After the completion of these topics, there was a question and answer session where students ask about certain doubts and the questions were informatively answered by the professor Ghosh.

CONCLUSION
After the successful completion of the session, the students who participated enthusiastically were rewarded with certificate of participation. The certificate distribution was done by honorable faculty Professor Kapil Mohan Garg and Professor Ghosh. Last but not the least students were advised to keep practicing the skills they learned for their own learning and benefit in the coming future.
